The hot tip is to put on the secret-sauce! That's a couple, 1/8" thick vinyl foam tape rings, laid in the inside depressed area.

Those darn $4 clamps work like a charm, you can actually hear the difference with/without the clamp. Funny thing is that the 'difference' is subtle, it's not always readily discernible as better or worse. My default for 25 years or so however has been to clamp all records lightly.
