The Dynavector cantilever is 6-mm long and 0.3-mm in diameter according to the specifications on the Dynavector website.
Dynavector XX2 MkII
> The other thing I never understood is why the VTA line went from the contact point to the cantilever pivot which is a very ambiguous thing to define.
If you study the diagram below, you will see that VTA must be defined by a straight line that connects the stylus/groove contact point to the cantilever pivot point. This line represents the radius of the vertical modulation arc of the stylus in its neutral position. I guess I don't know how else to explain it to you, but it seems perfectly logical to me and it doesn't seem at all ambiguous. At any rate, that is the definition of VTA. Therefore, if you use the angle of the straight cantilever on the XX2 MkII cartridge, you need to add about 3-degrees to the cantilever angle to get correct VTA.
> I simply use the cantilever to the record angle which is much easier to measure reliably and then put my faith in the people who made the stylus assembly.
Well, I don't even do that much. I simply set the cartridge body level with the record playing surface and hope for the best. However, you can't always trust the manufacturer to make the stylus/cantilever assembly correctly. See the picture below.
By my calculations, the vertical contact surface in the diagram below needs to make an angle of 75-degrees with the straight cantilever in order to achieve SRA of 92-degrees with VTA of 20-degrees.
