Your consideration of the Klyne suggests you have some issues? Maybe you're getting some interaction between the SF and the passive pre- passive preamps are not easy to interface. Research is indicated.
I didn't find a schematic for the SF but the tape outputs may be buffered, and in any case will sound about as good as that design can sound. Which should be pretty good if you like that school of tube sound. The outboard power supply with the tube rectifier is nice!
If you keep it, maybe find a shop that will bench check it for you. Replace the tubes and let them settle down a while (maybe spend some dough on Mullards??), and give it a new life. The SF should be compatible with the Goldring MMs- the cited 61 dB gain is a mite low but not a problem.
I'm listening that way now to a vintage Luxman preamp as a phono stage and it sounds good. There's no harm in taking the output from the main, assuming it's quiet. Just stick a wad of gum on the volume knob when you get things dialed in.
