I have several early GZ LP's, "Sorcery" and "More Sorcery" IIRC. He was seeking a way to wrap his gypsy guitar sound around pop songs to render them somewhat like transmuted jazz standards. When it worked, it was pretty darn good, his sound is distinctive and he is a master stylist. I'd say 'stylist', not necessarily a great innovator.
