RE: Changers can work

...but have additional problems versus single-play tables. That SL-D5 is a mid-line consumer unit, direct drive, from 1980. It's plastic-y and fairly light. It has great specs, but remember this was an epoch when EVERYTHING had great specs. I just repaired an old changer recently...

Check the old photo I found- the D5 had many cool accessories, especially the 45-changer spindle, for those hip beach-party weekends. What you really hope for is the single-play spindle. These can be grotesquely expensive to buy on-line but if you're crafty, you can find a drill-bit that will fit exactly and cut with a diamond-saw... if you care.

I'm sorry, I don't know if you have experience with these sort of vintage tables but here's my BS (Bear S*it)advice column of the day: If it holds speed and nothing is bent or broken, and you can adjust the cart to conform to a reasonable alignment, it could deliver you years of adequate listening pleasure (but not exactly a trip to Audiophile Nirvana).

Does the damped cueing work still? Old Technics seem last pretty well.
Since its DD, I assume it has separate motor(s) for the arm movement and changer spindle drive. In any case- flip her over, remove the bottom, and clean the dead bugs and cat-hair from inside gently. Spray the gear-train with CRC QD Electronic-Cleaner and very gently remove the caked-on grease. Be careful with the Q-tips they leave fuzz in the gears...Lube very very SPARINGLY, I prefer Tri-Flow oil on shafts, very light white lithium grease on gears. The idea here is that the rotational speed be unaffected as the actuators/switches are touched, as the arm crosses the record. Prop it up on soup-cans and use a mirror to look underneath as it operates. Study the mechanical marvels and make sure everything is smooth and purrin'.

Download the OM from Vinyl Engine and lube the motor like in the little picture. They recommend Technics miracle-oil but again I use Tri-Flow. There's some inscrutable cautions about what knobs you can turn when- check that out.

This Technics was designed for a medium compliance MM cart and you might not realize the additional performance from anything from the cartridge locker over say $150 bux. That ADC QLM integrated jobs never appealed to me but check the coils with an ohmmeter. If good, probably chuck the old Goodwill stylus (don't want to kill too many LP's) and buy a cheap new stylus- you can get one for $30 bux- take a chance and see if you like it. I recommend The Voice of Music in Michigan for honest advice and deals. If you wanted a new cart, an Audio Technica AT-95 elliptical seems like a good match for this dude for around $50 bux, + a headshell.

That's all I know. Sorry for the long rant...
