As a very-long-term DL-103 user I have to agree, The whole notion of "transparency & refinement" have come to carry less weight with me though. "Audiophile sound" may not be what you want to live with 24/7/365.
It's the old debate of whether you want to use yo' HiFi to listen to music or use music to listen to yo' HiFi. I choose (a), while trying to achieve a "cost-effective degree of transparency..." I felt the Denon's did that job pretty well.
I'm really feeling that dichotomy now using a vintage Pickering XSV body with an excellent aftermarket modified-Shibata stylus from the Pickering T.O.T.L D4500-Q. All in, this cart set me back about $100, and it sounds delicate when it's time for delicate, meaty and rockin' when it's that time... i.e. it strikes a good balance. That, and if I rip off the diamond by accident some day I won't commit suppuku
In the past I've allowed myself to get caught in a whirlwind when shopping for cartridges- getting all hung-up on trivialities, overly subtle nuances, listening for microdetails, blahblah.
Ironically the worst time to listen to music is when you're in the market for a cartridge!
