Audio Technica lists a recommended VTF range of 1-1.5g. Normally it is wise to set VTF to the high side of the recommended range, then, if no distortion heard, incrementally lower the VTF until distortion is heard, then bump back up to the lowest distortion free setting.
Also, try using your heaviest modulated LPs to test this.
In addition, be sure the distotion you are hearing is not due to dirty LPs. even new ones can have crud left over from the pressing process. A good vacuum RCM is an invaluable accessory for any LP lover. At least use a good CF brush (Audioquest?) before each side is played.
And check the stylus for "bunnies."
