I had always kept this phrase of Bill Szymczyk's in the back of my mind because it just seemed right. Years later I read a cool book on "psychoacoustics" published by Philips and their studies support the idea that there is a "correct" listening level for any given recording, corresponding generally with how loud the music was mixed and mastered. It has to do with the relative sensitivities of the ear at the frequency extremes -- as the actual loudness changes, the perceived loudness our brains hear changes at a different rate, depending on the spectral content (the basis of "loudness" controls' action).
You have to figure that if it's printed on the jacket, it must be true!
