After many amps passing through the Bearcave stretching over 2 millennia, the only one I kept was my Pass "Forte" model 2. It just sounds *right* and has paired successfully with a wide range of cartridges, only a couple misfits. The only other pre that held a candle was a Lux C120 but it was falling apart and I couldn't live with it. The Pass has sounded perfect in my system for around 20+ years now. Part of the pleasure of any audio device is its excellence of construction and durability.

One thought occurred to me, since last night I did a serious listening comparison of two sources (actually it was 2 CD players- adding to the complexity was comparing coax digital, Toslink, and analog outputs!) I used headphone to avoid the rather high noise level in my home and really focus my concentration. The results were ...grrr ...inconclusive.

Both sources, each using their best-sounding output mode, sounded good. #1 was a little warmer and less defined in the bass but just got me toe-tapping. I love that machine. #2- the new one- sounded more defined and possessed a more perfect octave-to-octave balance (I'd call it a more "audiophile" sound, if you'll pardon me). After having enjoyed the warm toe-tapper, it felt a bit lean.

Probably I could learn to live forever with either. So which will I plug in? Both I think for now. I need to hear both through my Thiels. It takes me some listening time to sort differences this subtle- weeks maybe.
