I did get a decoder once upon a time, set it up for SQ/QS, and fooled with it for a while but the effect was IMO *uninteresting*. I sorta' accidentally kept accumulating quad LP's however.
Around the time I was experimenting, DVD's with 5.1 soundtracks entered the arena. I got a Citation Dolby 5.1 preamp/processor that worked quite nicely for movies. It was able to dig some quite-decent ambience from some of my LP's, especially the encoded ones, and I sold the quad decoder.
Multichannel music was fun but I came to my senses and went back to stereo for all music listening. I do understand when you say contemporary hi-def type multichannel audio is "different but equally enjoyable." Takes a room-full of really good speakers though?
