Due to real and reactive elements, both intended and parasitic, the cartridge, cable, preamp input system forms a resonant circuit.Since the systems resonant response can vary all over the map due to differences in preamps cables and cartridges chosen in each case, the typical approach is to design the unloaded system to be underdamped with an unwanted high Q resonant peak and rolled off bandwidth. So it requires more loading in the form of more capacitance and or parallel resistance to be added by the user in order to find the optimal resonance damping for the system.
An optimally loaded cartridge will have minimized resonant peaking along with optimized frequency response.
