"Basie Live at the Sands (Before Frank)"

Atomic Basie, Basie Plays Hefti . Most of the Basie big band stuff on Pablo is worth checking out. Don't know how your bro feels about Frank Sinatra but the Basie/Sinatra team-ups are terrific. Quincy Jones did the charts.
Look for Akiyoshi/Tabackin Big Band LPs on RCA. They're easy to find and cheap when you do find them, and they're mostly from the 1970's so used copies are usually clean copies.
My favorite big band (sort of big anyway) album is Art Pepper + 11 but you'll pay through the nose for original Contemporary copies. My copy is one of the old APs, tube mastered by Doug Sax, and you'll pay large for that version too. One of the Euro labels (Waxxtime/Doxy or something like that) has a cheap reissue you can usually find at HalfPrice Books for about 15 bucks.
The combo isn't a true big band but it hits every bit as hard as Atomic Basie .
Got some Ellington recs too, if you're interested.
