Clamps can help

The best is a vacuum hold-down, à la Sota.

Second best was the ever-so-slightly bowl-shaped platter of the Ariston RD-40 with a center clamp. Yes, it made a very slight azimuth error, but it worked very well.

Third best is probably a rim clamp plus center clamp.

Fourth best is a center clamp, which is what I have.

The stylus tracking a groove makes noise that propagates throughout the LP. Sota used to do dramatic demos of their vacuum system. They had you listen to an unmodulated groove while a second tonearm tracked a live cut. You could clearly hear noise from the other stylus, until they turned the vacuum on, and all went quiet.
