Determining a recordings mastering history....

While considering random "analog" recordings, the question comes up for me occasionally. See linked example.

What if I am not educated enough to determine the mastering process by ear? How does one research a particular recordings mastering history? ie one key point would be whether or not any A to D and D to A conversions exist within the production chain.

I had assumed that most newer music was being mastered entirely in the digital domain.

My point is that I can't imagine why I'd want to purchase an analog copy of a recording which had been produced in digital since I'd rather just listen to the high res digital copy in that case.

However, when a recording has an entirely analog mastering history I'm definitely interested in hearing about vinyl releases.
