I don't think safety isolation would necessarily be a requirement for this application, though I don't know this for sure.
It is probably not technically impossible to do direct coupled outputs if the dc rails are high enough to work with. Maybe a boosting/inverting pfc stage feeding the motor drive stage??? Or you could even just use a 60Hz step up transformer to develop the high voltage DC rails that would feed the drive.
Of course, since I'm not actually building anything the smoke all stays put. Hats off to Twystd for putting the rubber to the road. I could imagine a fancier design might require a whole engineering team and fairly hefty budget to get it right, but only after lots of cussing and flamed out prototypes get trashed.
