If you bounce your digital 2-track mix to half-track tape before mastering, that can make a big difference. Tape has a way of glueing the mix together, at least for small ensemble material. Machines like the classic Ampex and Studers have very distinctive sounds, which can be an advantage for some recordings. I know one mix engineer who sometimes sends his mixes to a Studer deck that's not running any tape, just to get the sound of its electronics.
Tape can make a huge difference in imaging on some material. A mix that has a shallow image can sometimes be transformed into a huge three-dimensional image by sending it to tape.
