Because it sometimes sounds better

I assisted on the Bob Dylan Self Portraits vol. 10, which was mixed in Protools and released on CD and LP. I was surprised how much better the LPs sounded, as they are, by definition, one generation removed from the original 2-channel mix. I'd guess the improvement came from bouncing the 2-channel mix to 15 ips half-track tape on a Studer A80, but maybe it was some magic Ryan Smith did when mastering from that tape to vinyl. I'll bet on the Studer - it has a very specific sound, and tape has a way of glueing the mix together.

That there was such a difference on this project was extra surprising, because so much of the original material varied from good to pretty bad - some of it was from haphazard sessions recorded on cassettes in a basement.

There are always mysteries. When theory doesn't match what your ears hear, go with your ears.
