It is wrong to assume that we all hear music in the same way and thus think that everybody's enjoyment of music would be improved by better equipment.
Fewer professional musicians are audiophiles than the normal population. Studies with PET scanners have shown that when these people hear music a different part of their brain lights up. It shows that they're hearing the music in their brain as if it was being played live and the playback method has no effect on the result. In fact I have a friend who's the principal viola in the symphony and he listens to vinyl (he has a great collection) on a 50's MAGNAVOX console! Sure, it's tubes but that's all you can say for it. Nevertheless, I'm sure that he derives as much enjoyment from it as I do from my rig.
My suspicion is that many of these "collectors" may just hear music differently. Some of us listen to the music and some of us listen to the equipment and some of us move back and forth :-)
