As the grooves modulations are forced into contact with the needle by the motor turning the record, depending on the impedance presented to the record as determined by the damped mass spring response of needle/stylus/tonearm/etc assembly and how that impedance varies by frequency, will determine how much vibrational energy gets reflected back into the vinyl, or transmitted into the tonearm due to undesirable response of the assembly in terms of resonances etc. This does not take into consideration less significant factors such as the motor braking achieved by the cartridge coil driving non infinite preamp input impedance and probably a whole host of other things.
