Try dyeing it . . .

My sister wanted a table for her hallway in maple with a Cappuccino stain finish. It took me 5 or 6 tries to get the color to look even. I ended up using an alcohol-based dye application with continual wetting to avoid blotches or streaks. Top-coated with a water-based poly. A complete PITA but that hall table looks great still.
