Yes the mod is DIY. In my case, I removed the platter and mailed him the TT parts, the spindle bearing/well assembly. He inspected it for wear, polished the spindle, replaced the steel ball on the bottom of the spindle with a ceramic one, and screwed the new improved sapphire bearing piece into the bottom of the bearing well and sent it back to me. He included a special lubricant.
Google "Jim Howard Applied Fidelity bearing" and you will see many pages and lots of feedback on his work, primarily Lencos and Technics but he does others. This is very worthwhile so you understand what you are getting and you will learn a lot about bearings - it's a whole audiophile subculture.
