Unipivot shimmy

I've not had the VPI arms, but have lived with Hadcocks for ages. With unipivots, it's easy to dampen vertical movement, most often by putting silicone goop in the pivot well.

Horizontal damping is harder. I have one LP that excites the arm at its resonant frequency, and it does the shimmy thing - enough to be very audible. I know one Hadcock owner who fashioned a damping trough behind the pivot, with a rod hanging from the counterweight immersed in the trough. It worked, but tended to tilt the arm slightly.

Looking at the Hadcock pivot assembly, it could be damped for horizontal movement. Look at that brass bushing that houses the pivot bearings. If it had 3 or 4 little "bumps" on its circumference, and those bumps were immersed in the silicone *and* didn't touch the sides or bottom of the well, I think we'd be on to something. Maybe next time I have it apart I'll see if I can solder bumps on the bottom edge of that bushing, as there is plenty of clearance between the bushing and the bottom of the well.
