RE: SUT advice needed!

Depending on the core material response, as a transformer is just on the verge of getting pushed into saturation the distortion could be mainly second order. I'd guess distortion from a "soft" saturation would be fairly tolerable if it was mostly 2nd harmonic and the amounts of it weren't out of hand.

High gain active stages have to work around noise the electronics add that passives like transformers don't even have. At some level of gain, even with state of the art electronics, it's going to be audible.

You might want to try both ways if you can to see which way you like better. Each way of doing things has it's own trade offs and there are likely to be good and bad examples of both ways out there.
