"They are noisy and tinny."True enough. Though since the schematics and layout were available I took the risk I could fix those problems and bought some. Turns out completely solving both issues is surprisingly easy. I was able to take the noise floor introduced into the signal chain demonstrably below the level of a high quality denon test discs noise floor, at least I could verify it at the frequencies my TT's rumble didn't swamp the measurements, by solving the ground loop problem built in by Cambridge at the factory. The tinniness seemed almost 100% attributable to Cambridge choice of signal capacitors. By getting all the aluminum electrolytics, polyesters, and ceramics out of the signal path and replaced by suitable polypropylene (I even used some small polystyrenes where I could in a couple places) the problem is solved. I mean, I wouldn't call it perfect now the polypropylenes are in there but almost to a don't care now. Whereas stock really is pretty bad yucko distortion from the big AEL coupling caps they use. Some people like rolling op amps but I found after noise and coupling caps are solved, you are mostly there already.
