You could make a "thing-a -ma-jig". It requires strip of plastic about an inch wide and 5 or 6 inches long. Cut a piece about 1" from it. Connect the long and short pieces that result with an adjustable bolt. The long piece lays on the weigh pan of your balance (you can hold it there by placing a coin on it). The short piece is adjusted so that when your cartridge is set on it the cart. is at the correct height. This works for laboratory style top loader balances. With the small cart. balances out there something similar can be make from something like an old credit card. Just bend it to right shape.
