recording mono with a stereo cartridge

I do not have a mono cartridge. I'm using a Denon DL 304, Jolida JD9 and a Tascam DA 3000 to record and iZotope RX4 for clean up.

There are gain differences between the two channels. This is the case for the new Beatles releases but also other mono recordings from the 50s and 60s. Thinking it would sound better to equalize the two channels, I used RX4's channel ops to replace the right channel content with that of the left. The result was different than I expected. The sound stage became more focused.

I also tried changing the phase of one of the two channels by 180 degrees. The result was the same.

I'm not positive but it appears that the two channels were 180 degrees out of phase. Is this why having a mono cart is preferred?
