Hi, John
You didn't delve far enough on my analog page. Those words were describing the first SL-1200 that I got for my GF who was not an audiophile. Upgrading that TT would have been of no use because she was not able to appreciate the difference. But in many respects I stand behind my assertion. Compared to many "entry level" TT's the SL1200 sounds better out of the box than many highly touted entry level TT's costing about the same.
But continue down the page and see my "Frankentable", cobbled together from a really dilapidated SL1200 that I rescued on Eby for 100 bux. I then proceeded to upgrade it by installing a Soundsupports armboard and replacing the broken stock tonearm with an SME 3009 arm with an AT150ML cart. I polished that off by applying two-part polyurethane clear coat enamel. I don't remember if you were there that year but I brought it to Ribfest about three or four years ago. It sounds really great and I have one of Jim Howard's bearings waiting to be installed.
I agree that there are many upgrades but out of the box it's a great TT that is beyond entry level, espcially considering the price!
