Yeah, the fumes are hellish. When I was in college I worked in the water resources lab and one of my jobs was sterilizing the sample bottles. After they were washed with detergent the next step was to swirl chromic acid in them, top to bottom, for about five minutes then to rinse them numerous times with distilled water, then triple distilled water, then fill them with fresh triple distilled water, IIRC.
