semi-auto and auto vintage TTs that an expert has gone thru, adjusted, tweaked and re-wired are avaiable on e-bay, a-gon and occasionally on here aa trader, usually around $350-$600. the japanese tables from the 70's had the benefit of substantial engineering and sold in sufficient numbers to spread out the cost of the engineering.
contary to the beliefs of several other posters to this thread, my refurbed technics sounded better than the rega i had before i got the technics.
brands like denon, jvc, sony, marantz, pioneer, kenwood etc made excellent tables in the 70s and they are a relative bargain now. if this is something you want to pursue, there may also be relevant discussion in the vintage forum.
