thanks for the follow up. pulled out my copy of TabFSM tonight, it was in the very last place looked.
tonight on side 1 track 2 the vocals are dead center and very vivid and real. the instruments are separated by channel, and the cymbals are distorted, but not overly or unpleasantly so.
since RSD i have switched in a new tube integrated and back to my JC-3 phono-pre and the sound of this record today is quite different than i recall it from RSD. more clarity and openness than i heard before, still some bright edges, but sounds like a better recording. same table, same cart.
i surmise that with the various elements of the sound "pulled apart" more by the premium phono-pre, the distorted parts are given less prominence in the overall presentation.
bottom line: with a better phono-pre my assessment of the recoding improved. not surprising perhaps, but still a revelation. setting, expectation and mood, as always, do doubt a factor also.
and the best music on this LP is, also as always, killer.
