most brushes basically useless!

Hi Andre,

There are two important considerations:

1.) The first, and I guess the 'most' important thing to look for is how the carbon bristles are "bound" into a brush. In two out of my three samples, the bristles are imbedded in a plastic strip; then the strip (holding the bristles) is clipped or slid into a metal handle. Brushes of this type of construction WILL NOT WORK -- because the plastic part in which the bristles are imbedded is NOT conductive, and so interrupts the flow of static to ground (or even to your hand!) So I have come to the conclusion that brushes of this type, where the carbon bristles are held or imbedded on a non-conductive material (like plastic) are basically USELESS for removing static charges from a record. There may be other carbon brushes out there, besides the Hunt brush, that hold the bristles in a conductive (metal) material. I have not examined them all.

2.) As long as the carbon bristles actually contact a conductive element (in the Hunt brush, the rows of bristles are clamped in place by the aluminum handle) then all that is necessary is for a drain wire to be electrically in contact with the handle (because the handle itself is in electrical contact with the carbon bristles!)

To answer your specific question, I just pulled the endcap off the Hunt brush and placed the stripped end/wires of my little drain wire across the rough edge/end of the handle/extrusion, and then I replace the endcap to hold the wire in place. This is of course temporary. I will eventually solder a little spade or eyelet fitting to the end of the drain wire and then drill a hole in the aluminum handle to attach it with a little metal tapping screw. So in the case of the Hunt brush, at least, there is a clear electrical path from the bristles to the handle to the drain wire. Does that clear it up for you?
