The tracks that I'm using on the Hi-Fi News Test record are the first and last tracks on side 2, which as I understand are to test tracking ability. There is a similar track in the middle of side 2 as well. On some cartridges, the sound is even and clean in both channels. Some will buzz lightly, occasionally, on one channel...but are mostly clean. The Sumiko Pearl starts out on the first track screaming, chattering, buzzing, and crackling away. The Ortofon OM20 passes all three tracks smoothly. The Shure M91ED almost does it perfectly...close enough. On the other hand, the Sumiko Pearl is horrid, followed by a Pickering V-15 AT-3 which falls flat on it's face, and Grado cartridges usually fail pretty badly. Am I in some way misunderstanding how to use this test lp? These results are relatively consistent regardless of the tracking force or anti-skate adjustments.
