This is going to sound like a question that begs the answers "Do what you think sounds better" and "Use your common sense" but I'm going to elicit opinions anyway. I'm currently using an ASR Mini Basis Exclusive stage. Two carts: a Dynavector XX-2 MKII and a Lyra Helikon mono. I've been experimenting with gain on the ASR. First at 66 DB, then 60. Both of those result in me not needing to bring the volume on my amp(Fisher 500C) past 9 o'clock for very suitable volume. If I drop down to 54 db,I have to push the volume to 11 or even 12 o'clock for suitable volume(this is with the Dynavector whose output is .23mv. The Lyra is .3 so a little less gain is needed). The question really pertains to do I want less phono gain so I have more control of the volume through my amp? Is there a rule of thumb here?
Thanks.
