An Exclusive P3 is a very heavy beast (weighing over 100lbs), and usually requires two boxes, which if combined as a single box goes outside the normal shipper size guidelines. Most international parcel shipment services limit one box to 25kg. JapanPost's EMS is limited to 30kg. If you add the X+Y+Z sizes of the package together, usually they cannot exceed 150cm. In some shippers' cases, they have to be lower so that the calculation of quantity of [X + (Y+Z)x2] is less than 300cm. For the P3, that means two heavy boxes, and therefore probably custom shipping, or 2x 25kg through JapanPost EMS. Getting UPS to send a 100lb box across the country by 3-day air will also cost decent money.
For a 20kg box from Japan to the US, it is $265 for 3 days, 10% less for 6 days, $210 for 2wks, and $110 for 4-8wks (usually takes 4-6). Someone shipping a lot of stuff (10-20 packages a month or more) would probably get a discount to those rates. Most people want the instant gratification these days. Back when these were new, people waited 4-6wks for delivery for all kinds of things they ordered.
The one thing which is an offset is on something like a P3, the difference in shipping it from Tokyo to Boston (as an example) vs L.A. to Boston (as a comparison example) is probably only $150-200 based on 3-day delivery. That is 3-4% of what you'll pay for the thing anyway so the total cost is not that different, assuming you have a P3 to choose from in L.A. Thing is, there may not be a P3 for sale in L.A. For $500 total budget, including 3-day shipping, it's better to buy closer to home. If 4-6wk shipping is OK, you start to open a lot of doors to yourself.
