Re: Read this Post in Audiogon, "Building Hi-end tables at Home Despot"

I read a part of the thread, it would take me too much time to read it all. It raised my interest in the old Lenco L78 i use for 78s, so i started to fool around with it. Damping the inside with bitumen tape, remove the thin bottom cover, put the whole thing on 4 big rubber pods, Spotmat on it, Stanton 681EEE cart i had lying around on it.
If you listen to a pop/rock record on the speakers (not on headphones), i´d say the rumble/noise is bearable, although it´s not as quiet as my Thorens Td145mk2. It´s not as detailed and transparant either but OTOH it´s got great PRAT and fat, fast and heavy BASS! You can hear every note the bass guy plays, electric or upright. Remember the Thorens is heavily tweaked with VdH cables etc.
I can imagine a heavy MDF plinth would not harm but IMHO the rumble is caused by the direct connection between the motor, the idler wheel and the platter. The Lenco is definitely fun to toy around with but i wouldn´t spend too much money. It makes a good mono machine, a mono cart will reduce the rumble as it picks up only the lateral movements of the cantilver.

Greetings, Freek.
