Hi Nhman,
The Vinylengine site is not working right now so I can't see how your machine works to assess the difficulty of getting it to turn at 78 RPM. I'm guessing that it is doable.
I play my 78s with a Shure M44 with an N44-3 stylus tracking at ~2.25 grams. Shure recomends ~1.5 to 3 grams. I believe that I am a good distance from being a moron and I think the folks at Shure are as well.
78s can indeed be played on a belt drive machine. I have a B&O Beogram 3000 which I converted to a brushless DC motor and have played 78s as well as vertically cut 80 RPM Edisons and a Pathe on it. I have an SP-12 stylus assembly which was re-tipped with a three mill conical stylus tracking at ~ 1.5 grams. It works fine.
If you have a mm cartridge there may be a suitable stylus for it.
When the Vinylengine site come up again I'll look at the service manual, if it is there, to see what it might take.
Phil
