In answer to your questions, the wood for both top and bottom is 3" thick maple. Boards were used rather than the thinner pieces one would use for butcherblock.

The brass tonearm pods weigh over 18lbs each. So I figure they will be stable. The brass was from the remnant pile of a metal supply house. The brass was a solid column four feet long and 3 3/4" in diameter. I have a friend that has a small machine shop. He sawed the rod into 5" chunks then put it in a lathe to true the ends and cleanup the sides which were corroded. Drilling the mounting holes on top was easy with a drill press. My friend also had a complete set of taps, both metric and USA, so threading the holes was also easy.

These tonearm pods were designed for surface mount tonearms such as Triplanar, Schroeder, VPI, ET 2, etc. They will not work for tonearms with a central pillar like Rega/Origin Live, Moerch, etc. That is why I ordered the Teres armboard with VTA adjuster. Make a 4" high armpod, bolt the Teres armboard to the top, get some different sized innersleeves for the VTA adjuster (22mm for Rega/OL, 20mm for Moerch, 15.8mm for the new airbearing Conductor, etc.), and you can handle any central pillar tonearm with any pivot to spindle distance.
