Loose language causes conflict...

As a Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference owner back in the 70s and a recent correspondent with Michael Gammon (whose operation is close to ours in the Midlands) I can perhaps elucidate on both sides of the argument.

Adrian might have been rather over-enthusiastic in his language; but certainly the step from a foam-suspended rigid turntable through that horrid bongy-legged thing to the current sprung-chassis Gyrodec and Orbe is development if not innovation.

The other change is the mating of record and platter - my Reference had the LP supported by foam cushions on the platter weights, whereas the current Michell offerings use weights below a flat platter, supposedly optimised for energy sinking from the LP structure.

Which one works best is obviously a potential test subject; I certainly would be most interested to try a "head to head" between a properly set up Hydraulic Reference and a current Gyro without its QC powers supply (which would be tilting the playing field).

Michael's dad gave us 70s enthusiasts some lovely toys to play with, which helped to advance the enjoyment of LP replay.

He also came up with some barking mad concepts which showed that his enthusiasm perhaps needed the injection of a sound business head.

It is very sad that he, like many other audio innovators (and in his case the word is accurate) have been ousted by the commercially-aware who may be less inventive, but have the business skills to keep the business going over time.

This often causes much emotion on both sides - but as someone who has experienced products from both sides, I would say that both parties deserve praise for their own contributions, but condemnation if they try to usurp the contributions of others.

After all, there's glory enough for all if all make an effort to advance the cause of music replay.
