Re: condensation ...

Hi,

Right off, let me say these aren't accusations / some of this gets touchy sometimes, for some reason.

I agree with the intent of your subwoof comparison ---- like Lp/phonostage setup, it has lots of parameters of it's own and lots of interactive (room, main speakers) ones too.

But here's the thing. Let's assume for the moment that what we're after here is Resolution, which is to say sound reproduction that's faithful to the original material. Not hyped, Eq'd, streamlined or exaggerated.

Hold it, let's stop right there. If it were Resolution we were after, I don't think there'd be as much subjective evaluation as we find necessary these days.
We'd probably all have O-scopes and Spl Meters to measure the in-room adherence to the original signal.

And we certainly don't want that ( at least not ALL that ).

So actual Resolution isn't quite it. But hopefully as analog/lp enthusiasts we're after something a bit more, well, faithful to the master tape than just finding the "..one gain setting and one impedance setting that sounds best.."
I'd grant that at the end of the day, with a given recording and a given system, it may come to that, but that isn't much of a goal, is it ?

Guess my point is that 'sounds best' may not amount to fidelity to the original necessarily; in fact it may be an invitation to get tied in knots along the way to arriving at a caricature of the original sound.

It's just the lack of a "flat" or "default" position on any of the elements involved. Which of course would have to change every time a new cartridge is mounted. And --since I also agree with both of you that I'd like to keep these options on the table--- I just wonder if there's anyone getting the impression that ...... maybe we don't really have anything but a moving target as an objective.

My point isn't just that opinions differ, there's no yes/no finality or that mileage varies, but that maybe there are too many variables to get beyond, "are we having fun now ?" .... at least until you bring in the test & measurement instruments.

And then you're certainly not having fun.

Know what I'm saying ?

J.
