Hi,Very nice review. Clear without oversimplifying.
Here's a Q though on the multiplicity of control elements on the SH.....
{ First let me enthusiastically admit complete envy at the prospect of doing just the kinds of comparisons and manipulations you're up to.... And I do get the why-Zen-when-there's-real kind of approach. There are enough hair-shirt elements in life already. }However : Don't you wonder whether there may be too many cooks here ?
For examp, when you've swapped in bright sounding Amperex tubes and the resistive (imp) loading is then turned down a coupla hundred ohms to finetune that, and then of course gain is upped on the phonostage and the attenuator is lowered on the linestage just to balance levels... but then you put on an even brighter Deutsche G. pressing so you opt out of MM and add the coil/trannie stage but then you need to adjust gain again but it sounds even better with a tad less capacitance loading......
You see what I mean. When I get anywhere near this kind of point I wonder --- what would this mean to someone who could look at a scope readout of this ? Am I actually cancelling something out on a wholesale level, like say, the lower woodwinds ? Is that superb rendering of an Oboe meant to sound like that, or.... was it a clarinet before I got to it .... ?
Who in their right mind would put me in charge of this ?Okay, don't answer the last one, but what do you think ?
happy listening,
J.
