haven't mounted it yet, recently bought an ortofon 2M black, Beethoven 250 model.
it had a lot of features for it's price, a boron rod cantilever ,nude Shibata tip, nano tube construction in the suspension, supposedly part of a new more ecologically sound construction strategy , and was on sale. There was also some noise about the cartridge body construction materials , and not having parallel sides, but such minor details won't mean much to my system, save for every little bit helps.
moving magnet was not my preferred choice , but the punch will be harmonious with all the rock and jazz records that primarily form my humble assembly of records that started about sixty years ago. If you crave some boomer tunes, I'm your man.
it replaces a shure that came upon hard times, the last of the v15 line before the product was discontinued. I figured I would ride that last cart to the end , having grown found of the sound and the fact that whenever I was in New York City, I could get the latest model at a very competitive price out of the electronics district, when comparable carts required paying an insulting to the pocketbook, boutique mark up.
I had grown somewhat disenchanted with having to send off to Japan for replacement styli, as the quality of the build had become somewhat below OEM in my estimation. Of course , I was just looking at the brush attached , which I didn't use, and not the tip, as my audio memory is not super human.
my disenchantment started when I bought two replacement needles, with the idea I could check the one in use against the spare to check for wear. but when I got them , I checked one against the other and found one sounded much better. I just aligned the cart body , and might have improved the results, but I just put the inferior one away .
So the handwriting was on the wall that it was time to return to OEM replacement tips when the time comes, so now I'm running ortofon, in large part because a couple of audio engineers in a YouTube roundtable discussion mentioned that ortofon had exceptionally good quality control , as compared to some boutique carts.
