I think this phenomenon is explainable. High-end audio dealers can't sell ordinary hardware items profitably without tacking on a very large markup. The probably don't expect most people to buy these things from them, but include them for the sake of being a one-stop source for all you need.
Bicycle shops have a similar problem. They generally only make a significant profit from the sale of bicycles. But they still sell tools, parts and accessories to keep their customers in the habit of coming in. And yes, you can usually buy them for less online, but I don't think lithium grease would cost as much as it does at Music Direct.
