Unfortunately, I don’t know all the answers. I, too, thought IM distortion caused amplitude modulation of the low-level, high frequency signal. However, I guess it also produces side-band signals. There’s a little blurb at the link below.I suppose it is possible the IM distortion is in the test record, but I doubt it is produced by the amplifiers or the digital recorder or the computer. The reason I say this is because I just ran a similar test on my CD player using a Denon Test CD while sending its analog output through my line stage into my Alesis ML-9600 hard disk recorder, which made a high resolution 24/96 copy. From that I burned a CD-24 so I could transfer the data to my computer where I analyzed it in the spectrum analyzer of Sound Forge. The side bands were all farther than –80-dB below the level of the high frequency signal.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the Dynavector looks like.
