I recently built a Hagerman Cornet and am astounded at how good it is. Even if you don't want to go the DIY route the price for the plug-n-play version would be reasonable. It replaced a Musical Fielity X-LPS that was fair by comparison. Friends who upgraded from receivers to outborad phono stages (Creek OBH and Cambridge) are also very happy so I suspect that you would do well to at least audition some possible units
