Re: Phono stage

Even though I do not own the same gear as you, I have a Denon AVR-3802 as my amp, which is a few year older varient of yours. Even though my DIY table featuring a Rega RB250 arm and Denon DL-110 cartridge plays nicely through it and the built in phono stage, I'd say yes a quality stand alone unit will walk all over the built in phono stage of your Denon AVR-3805.

I just received a few days ago my Cambridge Audio 640p phono pre-amp. Immediatly it sounded better and as it burns in will get beter yet. I mean it was very clear how much better my vinyl sounded through it. Highs sounded much more real, the soundstage was deeper and wider. Vocals esp. well recorded female vocals were much clearer and rounded out. The background noise dropped much to the point of mostly only hearing the tape hiss of the master tape and of course occasional clicks and pops, which themselves are more muted. Of course since most of my vinyl is bought used, sometimes clicks and pops are there due to poor playback or a previous owner. Anyways the next best thing you can do to your already fine setup is a decent phono pre-amp. Which one to buy? Well it depends on how much you want to spend. My Cambridge 640p came to about $250.00 Cdn. shipped with taxes. I think that is a very good performance to value return.
