I have no way to measure wear and it's really not big a concern as I have a large collection of 45s. I simply don't play any one record enough to wear it out.
My favorite setup for older mono 45s is either an Ortofon Concorde or OM body with a D25M tip. This is a 1.1 mil conical which I track at 3.0 grams VTF. Wonderful results, I really like this setup. I have read (on the internet FWIW) that one should not use fine line or Shibata styli on styrene 45s. I don't know if there's anything to that, but I'm happy enough with the conical and I can't discern any undue wear using it.
