Unlike other retippers, Expert prefer to retain the original cantilever unless there is pre-existing damage that precludes its use. This is also my preference since you retain the voicing of the cartridge as far as possible.
Incidentally, in a recent exchange with Mr Hodgson, it transpires the hyperelliptical tip that Shure used was developed by him together with Shure. If you describe the symptoms you did to the forum, he will be able to carefully examine the tip and tell you exactly what the problem is.
They are very reasonable and Mr Hodgson doesn't undertake any work if he doesn't feel it is warranted - in other words you can trust them to do only what is absolutely necessary. In my case I had a Denon DL304 with a skewed cantilever and a virtually unused tip - I was prepared to pay him whatever he needed for the cantilever to be replaced and realigned. He thoroughly checked out the cartridge, verified the specifications and advised me not to replace the cantilever or tip as it measured absolutely perfectly just the way it was and the low mass tip was about as low as you get today. He could have made in excess of 400GBP, but preferred to take the sensible engineering approach. Of course I have to make a significant adjustment to align to the cantilever, but the point is you can trust them.
