The carts are coils and can pick up magnetic fields for sure. If you can short the inputs to your phono preamp, that would remove any noise contribution from the cart, That way you can tell how much of the noise comes from the rest of the system and how much is picked up by the cart.
Single ended systems, like you are running, share ground among the whole system by the RCA connection shields. So you need to consider the system as a whole when looking at where ground loops may exist. I bring that up since you didn't mention what the phono preamp RCA outs are plugged into and how that device is wired to recieve it's power. All of it matters with a single ended system.
