RE: A better way to RIAA?




The RIAA curve does not exactly match the pink noise characteristic; you get pink noise by filtering white noise at -10dB/decade. Consequently, using a flat gain amp with Pink Noise does NOT give a flat response.

If you open the link, you will see that the graph on the left is what you get with pink noise using a flat gain amp.
The response on the right is with RIAA EQ applied to the flat gain response and the expected -10dB/decade response is achieved. Follow back in the link to John's post providing the RIAA pre-emphasis/EQ values at different frequencies to confirm this for yourself.

Notice how the Pink noise with flat gain is NOT flat as John insists? The cartridge response shown above is the SAME cartridge playing back the RIAA pre-emphasised White Noise test tone on the Ortofon test disc.

By all means follow John's recommendation if you think he is correct.....
