On the face of it, I think Graham Slee is doing a similar thing with his phono stages. i.e. two sets of EQ... one to provide the RIAA EQ and the other to equalise the actual cartridge response...He's written stuff about it, on his website (Link below) and, I believe, he was looking to patent it...
Haven't read all of his articles, to fully grasp the concept, but it is a good phono stage no matter what... I bought one of his accession MM stages after hearing a loaner.
